Hydrogen is playing an increasing role in creating the carbon-neutral societies of tomorrow; however, it’s a well-known fact that the fluid carries high explosion risks, and that high levels of hydrogen purity in equipment lead to embrittling effects on steels, causing loss of ductility and deterioration of tensile and fatigue strength.

PetrolValves strategy consists in developing the following multisided approach outlined in ASME B31.12 (Hydrogen Piping and Pipelines):

– The triple-offset butterfly valve design has been readapted on the geometry aspect: sharp angle areas and poor radii have been removed from the internal profile, thus avoiding trigger points, where hydrogen attack can start (stress concentrators), and reducing annexed turbolence and friction, which constitutes additional cyclic stress sources.

– Furthermore, long and short duration laboratory tests in Hydrogen atmosphere both to constant load and to cyclic load (fatigue test) are under performance on main steel materials involved in our products; the results will be used as input in the Finite Element Analysis to validate of the structural performance of the design and to assess the suitability for hydrogen embrittlement resistance.

Let’s talk with data and facts, look at the attached analysis.
